The Next District 5 business meeting is scheduled for Saturday August 29, 2009; from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The last meeting in 2009 will be Saturday December 5, 2009. The meetings will be held at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 2685 Packard Road, Ann Arbor.  ALL Al-Anon members are welcome to attend!  Have you been to a District meeting before? Please consider checking this one out – new faces and new ideas are needed and will be welcome!

District 5 Monthly Announcements:

The monthly announcements that are e-mailed to District 5 group representatives are posted each month in a print-friendly PDF file, here.  Group representatives and meeting members are encouraged to print this announcement list to bring to their meeting and inform their members of Al-Anon news and events.

Al-Anon Service Opportunities:

Our Seventh Tradition states that Al-Anon is a self-supporting program. We are supported not only by member contributions, but also by member service!  And, member service helps the individual who serves as well as the Al-Anon members and program. There are service opportunities at all levels of Al-Anon/Alateen. Here are a few!

District Level (District 5) Service Opportunities:

Ypsilanti Heritage Festival Al-Anon Booth: Al-Anon will host an information booth at the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, Friday August 21 through Sunday August 23, 2009, at Riverside Park in the Depot Town area of Ypsilanti, Michigan. It is a great opportunity for 12th Step work!  We need volunteers in 2 hour blocks. Contact Kim K. at District 5 to help in the booth: afgdistrict5@gmail.com. Please click here to print a volunteer sign-up sheet for your meeting!

Milan Area: At this time there are no Al-Anon or Alateen meetings in the Milan area. Would any one like to help start a new meeting? If you are interested, please contact us at: afgdistrict5@gmail.com.

Alateen Sponsors and Alateen Service Support Needed: Our area Alateen program needs adult Al-Anon member(s) to sponsor Alateen groups and support Alateen activities. Alateen sponsorship is extremely rewarding for the Alateen sponsor and extremely helpful for the Alateen members. Have YOU ever thought of becoming involved with Alateen service? The Al-Anon publication, “Alateen Sponsorship--Is It For You?” (S-27) provides an overview of the requirements to be an Alateen sponsor. For information on how you can sponsor an Alateen group or help support Alateen activities, please click here!

Web site service opportunities! District 5 web site people are asking for help:

w  From ALL members to add short messages or writings for our District 5 Bulletin Board/Member Sharing page.

w  From any/all members to write YOUR story (anonymously) to be shared on the District 5 Stories page.

If you would like to contribute - please contact District 5!

Does YOUR District 5 Al-Anon Meeting Have A Group Representative?  If not, your meeting members are missing out on the opportunity to learn about district news, participate in district functions, and vote on district issues.  At your next meeting, why not find out if someone is representing your group? You can find out more about becoming a group representative by contacting Mary Lou at afgdistrict5@gmail.com.

District-level Business:  Would you like to become involved at the district level? Would you like to help out at the district level in some way – e.g. helping with planning, organizing, or outreach? You can find out more by contacting Mary Lou at afgdistrict5@gmail.com.

These District 5 Al-Anon Meetings Need YOUR support: Our Al-Anon Declaration states in part, “When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, let the hand of Al-Anon and Alateen always be there ...” You can help support the only Al-Anon meeting in Belleville by committing to attend one or more times.  If you’d like more information or have other ideas on how to support this meeting, please contact afgdistrict5@gmail.com.

w  The “Wednesday Noon AFG” meeting at King of Kings Lutheran Church needs further support to grow and to thrive.

w  The Thursday 7:30 pm “Saline Serenity” meeting at Saint Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital needs support to continue. Please consider attending.

w  The 8:30 pm “Friday Nighters” meeting at King of Kings Lutheran Church requests support! This Al-Anon meeting has been running for over 20 years, and recently moved to King of Kings from the Washtenaw Alano Club. Their attendance has dwindled since the move, and they would like help to build the meeting back up.  Please consider attending this meeting; it is a great way to start the weekend with serenity!

w  The Thursday 8:00 pm “Serenity Through Recovery” Al-Anon meeting held at the First United Methodist Church in Belleville continues to need support to build up a regular membership base. This meeting is held concurrently with a large AA meeting that has been active for a long time.

These groups need member support to thrive!  Please consider lending your support to help keep Al-Anon available in these communities!

Michigan Area Al-Anon News:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL GROUPS: Michigan Al-Anon Family Groups Incorporated (MI AFG) is in the process of reconstructing and clarifying all of the state group records.  In order to accomplish this, the Michigan Group Records Coordinator needs to acquire an “Al-Anon Registration/Group Records Change Form” for every group in the state.  MI AFG has adapted the World Service Office (WSO) registration/change form in order to implement standardization and consistency.  The form has been adapted into an Excel Template so the MI AFG Group Records coordinator can receive it electronically and avoid having to re-key data – thus keeping errors to a minimum.

HERE’S WHAT IS NEEDED:

w  For groups in District 5 - each Group Rep (or another group member who can send/receive e-mail and has the Excel program) can e-mail the District 5 Group Records Coordinator at afgdistrict5@gmail.com to request a copy of the E-file Registration Form Template.  Instructions will be sent with the form. If a group rep or group member is not able to or does not wish to complete this form or does not have the Excel program, please contact District 5 for assistance and we will take the information verbally and complete the E-Registration form for your group.

w  For groups outside of District 5 – please e-mail miafg.grouprecords@yahoo.com to request an E-File Registration Form Template from the Group Records Coordinator. If your Group Rep or another group member is not able or does not wish to complete the form in the above manner, please e-mail miafg.grouprecords@yahoo.com for help, or contact your local district Group Records person or District Representative.  They (or another volunteer) will assist you.

The new Michigan-area Group Records coordinator has been working VERY HARD on this important information-gathering. Thank you, Kay, for your service!

Besides book marking this page, another way to keep up with Al-Anon activities in Michigan is through the Serenity Sentinel, a quarterly newsletter for Michigan Al-Anon Family Group members.  The Serenity Sentinel has articles from Michigan’s Delegate, Chairperson and Treasurer; information about upcoming Al-Anon events; and fliers and registration forms for the events.  A one-year subscription is $4.00.  Each registered Al-Anon group that maintains a current mailing address with the Area office will receive a free Serenity Sentinel. Please click here to print a subscription form.
